Index Inventory
A downloadable character sheet
Index Inventory for Cairn is an alternative character sheet/inventory management system for Cairn. The goal of this system is to be more compact and functional than the standard Cairn character sheet and to compartmentalize inventory management.
Inventory management in Cairn can be semi-confusing to a first-time player, and thus this system was born. By separating "containers" from the "character," in this case by maintaining separate index cards for each character and their backpacks, henchmen, wagons, mules, etc., it becomes much easier to recall what items are on the character at any given time. Want to go into the cave alone, with just your pack? Your spellbooks are in the hand cart. The utility of this is infinite, even making scenarios that are usually difficult, like trade between players and group inventory management in strongholds, easy to grok.
Feel free to hack this system however you'd like---I'd love to see/hear about successes/shortcomings of this system! Thanks for reading.
Additions/Changes compared to vanilla Cairn:
- The "NEED" box is for detailing when a player character (PC) is deprived. For example, if a PC is lacking water and becomes deprived, check the box labeled "D" and fill the "NEED" box with "water" to indicate the condition of ending the deprivation.
- To represent a slot being occupied by fatigue, simply draw an X over the slot. This is not represented physically on the sheet by any sort of checkbox.
- "MISCELLANY" represents the "stackable" or otherwise small items in Cairn. Small items, coins, helmets, or anything else a PC can reasonably wear or strap to their body are written in this section, slot-free.
- An item in the "HAND" slot does not necessarily mean it is in the PC's hands. It's assumed that they can stash or draw the item(s) in their "HAND" slots---swords, shields, staves, wands, torches, etc.---on their person and free up their hands at any time as an action. This does not change the items' positions in the slots, for ease of tracking, but does constitute unequipping them, i.e. unchecking the box labeled "E". This simply prevents unnecessary inventory shuffling. In-fiction, this is represented as the PC placing their sword in a scabbard, or strapping a torch to the outside of their backpack.
Notes:
- Fractional attribute values represent the possibility of temporary reduction of the attributes.
- The backpack that each Cairn PC begins the game with is a Container, and if one has containers with fewer than 8 slots, simply cross/shade them out.
